1st International Workshop on Multimode Wireless Access Networks (MOWAN)

Welcome to the homepage of the 2010 International Workshop on "Multimode Wireless Access Networks" (MOWAN). The workshop will be held in conjunction with BROADNETS 2010 in Athens, Greece on October XX, 2010.

The convergence of the third generation (WCDMA/GSM/HSPA) wireless network standards into the 4G LTE wireless network standard and the interoperation of complementary wireless access technologies like WiMAX, WiFi etc., open considerable challenges to the development of next-generation base stations and access gateways that can support current 3G technologies as well as next-generation standards. Stepping up to this challenge, industry is moving towards developing multimode base stations that will support multiple standards, while being flexible enough to adapt to changes that may arise in the design specifications or even the wireless standards. In this direction, the future of broadband wireless access networks is moving towards a distributed peer-to-peer and heterogeneous architecture incorporating multiple access technologies into multimode access points. Application of low-cost smart antennas, innovative cross layer architectures and cooperative mechanisms are some of the solutions which allow improving the system capacities, scalability and security challenges in next generation multimode wireless mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together the technologists and researchers who share interest in the area of the emerging broadband wireless and mobile networks, with particular focus on multimode wireless access networks and supporting physical and MAC layer technologies.

SCOPE

The convergence of the third generation (WCDMA/GSM/HSPA) wireless network standards into the 4G LTE wireless network standard and the interoperation with complementary wireless access technologies like WiMAX, WiFi etc., open considerable challenges to the development of next-generation base stations and access gateways that can support current 3G technologies as well as next-generation standards. In this direction, the future of broadband wireless access networks is moving towards a distributed peer-to-peer and heterogeneous architecture incorporating multiple access technologies into multimode access points. This decentralised architecture opens new challenges with respect to scalability, interference, seamless cooperation between Radio Access Technologies, security etc. In that sense, application of low-cost smart antennas, innovative cross layer architectures and cooperative mechanisms are some of the solutions which allow improving the system capacities, scalability and security challenges in next generation multimode wireless mesh networks.

This workshop aims to bring together the technologists and researchers who share interest in the area of the emerging broadband wireless and mobile networks, with particular focus on multimode wireless access networks and supporting physical and MAC layer technologies. The main purpose is to promote discussions on recent advances in the analysis design and implementation of systems, protocols and services for next generation multimode wireless access networks. It also aims at improving the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this domain. Submissions are welcome from academia, industry, and government organizations.

This workshop solicits original papers related to all aspects of multimode wireless access networks, but not limited to the following topics:

Submissions:

Prospective authors are cordially encouraged to submit their contributions (using the BROADNETS 2010 templates, pages limit: 10 pages in two-column format) to [email protected]

Publication of Proceedings:

Workshop papers will be published in the Broadnets proceedings (available through IEEE Xplore).
