PANEL #1: Dynamic Layer 1/2 Circuits for High-Performance Applications

Many emerging high performance applications require multi-gigabits network end-to-end, and/or deterministic connections with low loss, low latency, and minimal jitter. Traditional non-deterministic, “best effort” TCP/IP networks, do not perform well for large data transfers (terabytes or petabytes) due to the behavior of TCP over long distances. There are several research and development efforts across the globe underway to help develop the necessary technology to allow the capability in the network to dynamically set up Layer1/2 circuits and utilize the bandwidth only when necessary.

Panelist Questions:

  • Why are dynamic Layer1/2 circuits necessary for some of current and next generation’s applications?
  • What are the greatest challenges in designing a network with this capability: will the control plane play an essential role or the management plane or both?
  • What is the status of current research on this topic?

PANEL #2: Ethernet in Metro and WAN Networks vs. IP

Ethernet has been proposed as a viable transport networking technology for the WAN and metro networks. The IEEE and ITU have already approved (Provider Bridges/802.ad, Ethernet OAM Mechanisms/Y.1731) and are currently reviewing (PBB/802.1ah, PBB-TE /802.1Qay, Ethernet Protection/G.8031 ) standards that allow for this new transport role of Ethernet. The Ethernet technology is widely accepted and ubiquitous and many vendors have already started to make and sell new products that will take it into the WAN. Carriers will soon make decisions on weather these new Ethernet features will provide the necessary CAPEX/OPEX to replace existing WAN technologies. This panel will debate next generation WAN technologies and the role of Ethernet.
